File extension gz information

The file extension is used to identify Gzip compressed archives that have been developed by use of GNU, a set of utilities that run on UNIX systems. GNU is distributed as a free software project to develop the Linux operating system and its supporting applications. GZ file extensions usually contain compressed data affiliated with the Linux systems and can be uncompressed by use of a variety of file archiving applications. Some of these applications include WinRAR and WinZip. Both of these applications can also be run on the Windows operating system enabling the GZ files to be uncompressed on the Windows GUI environment.
During the file creation, the files usually have a double extension in the format TAR.GZ. TAR file extensions are generally not compressed and will usually be bundled together in single files to enable them to be handle by the ZIP archiving format or in this case the GZ format. In some cases, these files will have file extensions with varying last letters that may seem confusing. However, most unzipping applications will identify the file formats as compressed files and will thus handle them in that way ensuring the uncompressing process cause no errors.
